NieR: Automata - definitely a good story

PS3 remaster NieR Replicant has become an unqualified hit, but despite NieR hitting the big time there’s still no talk of a new sequel.

There’s been a lot of talk in recent years about living in the darkest timeline but one thing we would’ve never dreamed possible in this reality is that NieR would become a major worldwide franchise, that’s sold over 7 million copies across its last two games.

Creator Yoko Taro certainly never predicted it and confidently suggested that 2017’s NieR:Automata was a fluke and that remaster NieR Replicant would not be as successful. Thankfully, he has been proven wrong though, with Square Enix today announcing that it’s sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

With the tally for NieR:Automata now at 6 million, the series has quietly become one of Square Enix’s biggest international hits. And yet still there’s been no word on a sequel.

There is a mobile title called NieR Re[in]carnation in development but in terms of a big budget, console-based sequel there’s not been so much as a whisper.

It’s clearly going to happen, given some of the far less successful games Square Enix has created sequels for, but what will be interesting is just how big a budget they will award it, given the previous games have all been relatively low tech.

Whatever happens, unfortunately PlatinumGames won’t be involved, as they’ve vowed not to work on any new game they don’t own the rights too. Although they did help out with some consultancy with Replicant.

One other possibility is that Square Enix could give Yoko Taro the chance to continue the Drakengard franchise, which NieR is technically a spin-off from.

That’s only due to a secret ending that was originally intended only as a joke, though, so it’s not hard to imagine him wanting to create a more solid connection between the two series.
